About this blog

The purpose of the Endangered Languages Media Watch is to collate reports relating to language endangerment that appear in mainstream media. This includes reports about last speakers, changing language attitudes and dwindling populations.

An important aspect of this blog is the reporting not just of fact, but of public attitudes and awareness. As such, the articles cited may contain terms not normally considered appropriate in the context of Documentary Linguistics. For example, an author of an article may describe a community as "primitive" or express other socially biased or prejudiced opinions.

The inclusion of an article does not imply that I agree with its content, merely that I believe that the publication of the article is of interest to those interested in language endangerment issues.

I look at a variety of media, but avoid posting from sources close to the subject, such as local newspapers from towns in areas where endangered languages are spoken, or sites whose brief specifically covers language or  anthropology.

I do not perform any journalistic or academic verification, such as multi-sourcing or referring to peer-reviewed journals. It may be the case that rumour or opinion is presented as fact by articles linked to from this blog. It is not my intention to mislead, merely to report what has been said. Readers must make their own investigations into the veracity of any claims, and not consider my report to represent any kind of verification.
